THESE VIOLENCE NEEDS TO END

It seems to me that violence against women has been tolerated for so long that the world has become numb to it

Violence against women

In India, there will be hardly any temple where a Goddess is not worshipped, but sadly, in reality, this will seem to be a lot more different if we see the violence against women in our country. Every day we hear a new more case against women. When will people change their perspective towards these issues?. According to the latest data released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), India recorded 88 rape cases every day in 2019 and a total of 4,05,861 cases of crime against women was reported in 2019, which showed a 7.3% increase as compared with last year.

Recently a Nikita Tomar case created a major outbreak in the country where a girl was shot dead outside her college by two-man. This incident not only created violence but also shows the weakening image of our country's law and order. So what actually happened in this case? What do these crimes happen? and what the government and we people can do on this? Let's see

NIKITA TOMAR CASE

Nikita, A 21-year-old girl, who went to gave her B.com exam was shot dead by two men with an unlicensed pistol in Faridabad. The incident took place on 27th of October. This whole incident was recorded in a CCTV and the police arrested the accused. These two people were named as Tauseef and Rehan. Tauseef wanted Nikita to marry him and convert her religion also. But after being rejected by her of his proposal, Tauseef tried to force her and at the end shot her with a pistol. He even kidnapped her in 2018, a complaint was launched by the girl's family but later it was withdrawn as the case was compromised between the two families. Tauseef also comes from a politician family, which has a long history of ties with the Congress Party.

After this incident, leaders of different Hindutva groups continued to make provocative and hateful speeches against Muslim, that too in the presence of policemen. Religion should not be indulged in any crime. A crime is a crime and a criminal will be a criminal irrespective of any religion. But the main problem is that people either find their political agenda or communal violence in these cases. Except for justice, everything is served in cases like these. But at last, we wholeheartedly want justice to be served. We have evidence, witness and the accused, we just demand a fair investigation to be done in this case without any political pressure.

WHY WOMEN DON'T SPEAK?

Why women don't speak
Why women don't speak

The number of cases we see above are only those cases which are registered, a majority of violence cases against women go unregistered. Most cases that go to court result in the accused walking free. Just 27% of rape cases in 2019 culminated in conviction. Consequently, many women prefer suffering in silence than facing humiliation. But, this is not the only reason, let's see the factors that affect women

  • In research, it was found that 65% of Indian men believe women should tolerate violence in order to keep the family together, and women sometimes deserve to be beaten. This might sound very surprising and sad, but this is the harsh reality of society and act as the first barrier for a woman to raise her voice.
  • For similar reasons, law enforcement officers are more motivated to accept offers of bribery from the family of the accused, or perhaps in fear of more grave consequences, such as honor killing.
Not only this in many cases, the victim's family is not able to afford lawyer's fees and court fees. Thus, at last, end up withdrawing their case without getting justice and the accused is set free. The government also does not do anything regarding this issue where justice is only meant for rich people. The average wait from complaint to judgement takes about 15 years in India. Obviously, a middle-class family cannot afford to fight case this long.

WHY DOES VIOLENCE HAPPEN?

A problem cannot be solved without knowing its cause. So, an interview was done with 122 rapists in order to know their mentality and state of mind that why they do these crimes. At last, the result which came out was much shocking. Only a few percent of them presented themselves as repentant while a majority of them presented themselves as non-repentant and even attempted to justify their crimes. (The link of the full interview is there in the reference.)

Castism

Castism or untouchability used to happen in the earlier times, but you won't believe these things are still practised in the rural part of our country. People do have separate shops for collecting money from Dalits and after receiving the money, they are first washed. This castism divides people and thus creates violence in the country. Castism terms to be the first reason for any violence.

Police Negligence

A study was done in 14 rape cases in Utter Pradesh and it was found that in 11 cases, time taken by the police to file an FIR took around 2 to 228 days. Imagine if police, who works for the safety of people starts doing this, how will the common people fight for their justice.

Law and Order

Laws are there but clearly, they are not enough. The government needs to make strict laws in these sensitive issues because sometimes not just the law, but the fear of strict law is enough to save crimes.

WHAT WE CAN DO?

Education

Sex education in schools
Educating students about relationships

Education plays a very vital role in order to change people perspective and also their way of thinking. As a sapling can be easily cut than a mature tree, similarly, any problem can be solved if taken care of at the beginning. That's why a child should be given proper education on these issues apart from the normal studies. So that when they will become adults, they will have a mature understanding of these issues.

Involvement of women

There should be an involvement of women in every field and majorly in politics. Although there are some women who misuse their power after becoming leaders for their political agenda but still the involvement of women is considered to have a positive impact on other women. There should also be a special division to solve serious crimes against women and that too with a fast investigation. This might not help in eliminating crimes but at least leads to a decrease in crimes to some extent.

At last what we common people can do?. If the school is not taking initiate then parents should educate their child on these issues and that too from a young age. Secondly, we can do is to report these issues as early as possible before it turns into a crime. People need to understand that violence doesn't give justice, in fact, it might take the life of some innocent ones too. So now, protests and candlelight march will not only help, along with these things it is very important for people now to act and this step will start with You.
