IS INDIAN MEDIA BIASED?
“Today a story is not told it is sold”
The media is said to maintain the bridge between the government and the people. The media is also said as the 4th pillar of democracy. With these two above statements, it is pretty much sure that how much important role a media plays in our day to day life. The media should act as a third eye to the government and should keep us aware and inform of what is happening around the world. But things can become very ugly when this media act as a barrier for the people, instead of focusing on the important issues it diverts you to some another topic.
Yes, but sadly this is the reality, this is what Indian media is doing nowadays. This year 2020 which turns out to be a bad year for almost everyone, a lot of things has happened this year including job losses, COVID deaths, economy, GDP, healthcare system, Indo-china clashes and so on. Here I’ll try to explain briefly some topics where the Indian media has failed to do its job.
SUSHANT’s CASE
This is the most trending topic nowadays which started with a very good objective of demanding CBI inquiry for Sushant’s death. But now the media has made this case into a real-life circus. It was started with justice for SSR but now no one knows when did it become justice for Kangana Ranaut. The media started this topic with nepotism and ended up with drugs in Bollywood. Right now, the case is under investigation. But the media is debating on this topic every day rather than focusing on real-life issues. From the photo below one can clearly see the number of debates on SSR case compared with the no. of debates on important issues.

ENTRANCES EXAM DURING
COVID
Students from the whole country protested against the exams. Almost every day it was trending on twitter to postpone the exams but not the government nor even the media listened to them. Risking the lives of lakhs of students was not considered important enough to broadcast on tv channels. At last no one listened and the exams did happen.

DEATH RATES
We
have the data on the number of people dying due to COVID. But no one is looking
at the no. of death and suicides happening nowadays due to job losses, hunger,
depression and whatnot. But according to the media, everything is fine. (“sab changa si”)
WHY MEDIA IS DOING THIS?
In a survey, it was found that fake news spreads six times faster than the actual news. So, keeping this in mind not even the media but also the social media trolls trying their level best to spread fake news so that the people must stay diverted from the real scenario. Not only the media but also the government is equally responsible for this ongoing act.
The media can question Kangana the whole day on useless topics but doesn’t have the guts to question the government regarding the economy of the country. There are several cases where media has failed to show the right news only a few have been mentioned above. Recently a farmer’s protest in Haryana which turned violent when police allegedly lathi-charged them. But still, there is no coverage in the news channels and since when raising your voice becomes anti-national in a democratic country.
CONCLUSION
India which is known to have the largest democracy has now dropped ten places in the Democracy Index Global Ranking to 51. The media needs to wake up, their work is to show the right information to the public and not spreading fake news. Instead of staying biased towards a single government, they have to stay neutral. Nobody is interested in listening to the news which is already irrelevant and that too from a noisy anchor. This also does not create a good image of the country worldwide and also instead of just getting the TRP distracting people from the main topic is not worth doing for any journalist.
